Verizon has announced the new Motorola Droid Pro, an Android Smartphone with a dedicated keyboard on its face. The keyboard on the Droid Pro is even very similar to the BlackBerry Bold’s keyboard. Other features are also pretty impressive – including the ability to use it as a 3G mobile Hotspot, and built-in security features, including AuthenTec IPSec multi-headed VPN integration, remote wipe of device and SD card, and complex password support – for those business types that need it. We gotta say, this device does sound promising. That said, the problem here is that everytime a QWERTY smartphone with a candybar form-factor comes around, it’s labeled a BlackBerry killer too. We had high hopes for the Motorola Charm, thinking that perhaps it really could be a serious BlackBerry alternative. Unfortunately the Charm’s subpar display and sluggish processor held it back. We hope that the Droid Pro doesn’t let us down too. That said, if it does indeed meet everyone’s high expectations, then only Verizon users will be in luck. We’ll have a full review of the Motorola Droid Pro as soon as we can get a hold of one.

For starters this one runs Android, it is also very similarly styled to the iPad and is sporting a 7″ touchscreen LCD with a 800×480 resolution. Inside it’s running on 2GB NAND Flash, and it can be expanded via SDHC TF cards unto 16GB, wifi, a 0.3 megapixel camera, 2 USB ports, and it comes with a dongle of a sort that adds an ethernet jack and two USB ports. Old-school Palm OS fans (we know a few of you came over from PreCentral.net) will be pleased to know that Access (we won't go into the whole Access-Palm thing) has brought over the popular app Graffiti to Android. [Market link | App Brain]

Graffiti allows users to use gestures rather than a keyboard (kind of like Swype without letters). To enable this app, like other keyboard replacements, first download from the Market. Then go into Settings, then Language & Keyboard. Select Graffiti, and then hold down any text box to select Input Method. Make sure Graffiti is selected and you're good to go!

This is Graffiti version 1.02, which is the original from Palm OS. Expect to see more functionality in the future. It's nice to see some of the functions that stood out for Palm are being brought over to Android. [PalmInfoCenter]
